The overview below summarises Wellcome, ERC, FWF, SNSF and NWO open access requirements only as they relate to monographs and book chapters. It does not include information regarding other research publications such as journal articles.

Scope of policy (content):

Wellcome
All original scholarly monographs and book chapters authored or co-authored by Wellcome grantholders, as part of their grant-funded research.

ERC
All book chapters as well as monographs and other long-text publications related to results from ERC funded research. FP7: only for grants supported under Work programmes 2012 & 2013 as a ‘best efforts’ requirement; Horizon 2020 & Horizon Europe: only peer-reviewed publications are covered.

FWF
All peer-reviewed research results of FWF funded research

SNSF
All peer-reviewed scientific monographs, anthologies and book chapters financed by the SNSF. Financing by the SNSF refers to financing of the research that has generated the results being published and/or direct financing of the publication by a book processing charge (BPC) or a book chapter processing charge (BCPC), resp.

NWO
All peer-reviewed academic books, book chapters and collected volumes which are the result of or report on research funded partly or in whole by NWO and are primarily aimed at an academic reading audience.

FP7: 6 months for all disciplines; Horizon 2020: 6 months (12 months for outputs in the humanities and social sciences); Horizon Europe: no embargo allowed

FWF
12 months embargo for books (applies only if FWF does not financially support the book publication. Zero embargo for book publications that receive funding from FWF)

SNSF
12 months (No embargo for publications which the SNSF funded by a BPC/BCPC)

NWO
12 months (No embargo for publications which NWO funded by a BPC)

Yes

ERC
Yes, publishing costs can be covered from the grant within the grant period (Horizon Europe: only if the entire book is published in open access).

FWF
Yes;
FWF has a dedicated funding programme for stand-alone publications (such as monographs and edited collections), which is available for FWF grant holders and researchers who conduct their research activities mainly in Austria or under the auspices of an Austrian research institution abroad.

SNSF
Yes;

  • SNSF has a funding scheme for OA Books (BPC) and OA Book Chapters (BCPC) for publications resulting from funded projects (ongoing and completed projects).
  • Stand-alone publications: SNSF has a funding scheme for stand-alone publications (such as monographs and edited collections). Eligible researchers should apply to SNSF.

NWO
Yes. NWO has a dedicated funding scheme for Open Access Books which are the result of research projects funded by NWO.

Repository

Wellcome
Deposit in a repository is required.

Wellcome mandates PMC Bookshelf, from which works will be mirrored to Europe PMC and OAPEN.

ERC
Deposit in a repository is required (either the author manuscript or the version of record).

FP7 and Horizon 2020: free choice of repository; Horizon Europe: use of a ‘trusted’ repository mandatory.

The ERC recommends OAPEN.

FWF
Deposit in a repository is required.

For FWF funded stand-alone publications: FWF mandates FWF-E-Book-Library, from which works are harvested by OAPEN.

SNSF
Publications that are funded by a BPC must be made available on the website of the publisher and be deposited in an institutional repository, in the OAPEN Library and at the Swiss National Library.

NWO
Publications that are funded through NWO’s Open Access Books funding scheme must be made available on the platform of the publisher and have to be deposited also in the OAPEN Library.

If an open access fee is paid publishers must deposit the work on behalf of the author immediately upon publication.

Authors may self-archive the author manuscript.

ERC
Works must be deposited immediately upon publication.

Authors may self-archive the author manuscript.

FWF
Authors or publishers must deposit the author manuscript or the electronic copy of the stand-alone publication.

For FWF funded stand-alone publications: FWF deposits the work on behalf of the author immediately upon publication

SNSF
If a BPC is paid publishers must deposit the work on behalf of the author immediately upon publication on their website.

If a BPC is paid authors must deposit the OA version of the publication in an institutional or discipline-specific repository immediately upon publication.

If a BPC is paid SNSF deposits the OA version of the publication in the OAPEN Library as well as at the Swiss National Library.

NWO
If a BPC is paid publishers must deposit the work on behalf of the author immediately upon publication on their website.

Authors may self-archive the author manuscript.
