New collaboration between SCOAP³ For Books and OAPEN: Open Access Books in Particle Physics
The Hague, 1 October 2021. The OAPEN Foundation is delighted to share the news that it has entered into an agreement with SCOAP³ for Books to provide a set of dedicated services around its open access book collection in Particle Physics.
SCOAP³ - the Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics - is collaborating with OAPEN as part of its latest open access book initiative. Since the introduction of SCOAP³ in 2012 under the auspices of the European Organization of Nuclear Research (CERN), the transition to open access for scientific articles in particle physics has progressed rapidly. Over 90% of the annually published scientific articles in High-Energy physics have been made free for both readers and authors worldwide.
In 2019, the SCOAP³ Governing Council approved the SCOAP³ for Books initiative to expand the content made available through the program to include academic books in particle physics and neighboring disciplines (including accelerator physics, instrumentation, etc). .

As part of this new collaboration, OAPEN will support SCOAP³ for Books by providing services in the areas of hosting, dissemination, digital preservation, analytics as well as a branded collection.
“We are very excited about this new partnership with CERN increasing the discoverability of the books in the SCOAP³ pilot,'' says Niels Stern, Director of OAPEN. ‘’These titles will now also be part of our metadata feeds to academic libraries and library intermediaries across the world, accessible through our API and through OAI-PMH harvesting and benefit from wide dissemination through a variety of channels including Google Scholar. We very much welcome this new initiative and look forward to all the books coming in through SCOAP³.’’
The first four titles that are part of this project have already been made available open access:
- Accelerator Physics (Fourth Edition)
- Challenges And Goals for Accelerators in The XXI Century
- Lattice Gauge Theories: an Introduction
- Quantum Theory of Angular Momentum
Over 100 important texts in the discipline will be added to the SCOAP³ for Books collection in the OAPEN Library as they become available.
The SCOAP³ for Books initiative was made possible through partnerships with leading publishers in high-energy physics and is funded through the generous support of hundreds of institutions from within the collaboration; a complete overview can be found here.
